High and Almost Dry

This was on the way from Redding to Sausalito, second day out. I was a little east of Hayfork at the junction of Highways 3 and 36. My GPS told me there was fuel a short way ahead. Actually, it was behind and up a different road. I know, it's just a machine. I'm the human who should know how to use it intelligently. I ended up backtracking 11 miles to Hayfork, invoking the mysteries of the Universe to not run out of fuel on this very deserted stretch of road. California may be the most populous of the United States, but it has many sparsely-peopled areas.

Unfortunately, this was not the only fuel scare I had on the trip. New motto "When in the sticks, fuel up early and often."

Once I refueled, I was treated to heavy rains and some snow flurries on these mountain roads. Once I got into Humboldt County, the roads were less well-maintained. You'd think with all that income.... Oh, yeah! It's an underground economy. So I crept along, very carefully.
